About Argyll Youth Theatre

Argyll Youth Theatre began life in 1999 with a small band of eighteen young people who wanted to act and sing. The first production in 2000 was a One Act play based on a Hans Christian Anderson story "The Emperor's Nightingale. From this tiny acorn the mighty tree grew and now in 2007 we have sixty five members and a waiting list for entry.

Our activities include workshops, productions of musicals, plays and concerts (not forgetting the after show parties) and trips away to see live professional theatre. Over the years we have been to Glasgow 6 times to the Kings Theatre and the Pavilion, Eden Court in Inverness once, and London's West End twice with a further visit planned in July this year.

How to join

If you are aged between 8 years of age and 18 and interested in theatre, acting or backstage work, want to join in theatre games and workshops, then put your name, address and phone number on paper and drop it into House and Home in Combie Street. We do have a waiting list but we'll add your name ready for the next intake..

The group meets every Thursday from 6pm to 8pm at the Corran Halls with special rehearsals for the current production on Wednesday evenings at the same time. Fees are £3 per week or £30 per term. Remember this is not a youth club and as with all theatre disciplines requires a lot of commitment - the reward for the hard work comes at Show time with all the excitement, glitter and buzz of a show!

As well as learning the theatre disciplines we teach teamwork, care and support of one another (we don't like prima donnas!), a love of music and language and a joy of giving pleasure to others and achieving something worthwhile. Recent research shows that musical theatre with all its multi tasking expands channels within the brain and improves coordination and intelligence.

A number of the youngsters we've worked with over the years have gone on to the Apollo Players in Glasgow, University Drama Groups, other am-dram societies and music groups. It's a great way to make good friends.
